The Chrestomanci Chronicles by Diana Wynne Jones
She makes a point of having her protagonists look bland, a bit doughy, sickly, or a little ugly. No one looks perfect. No one is perfect. They all have character flaws that drive you up the wall but you still like them.
There are parallel universes and astral projection and cats being awesome and magical but still grumpy and snarky.
My favorites are “The Lives of Christopher Chant” and “The Magicians of Caprona.”
