Caddis fly larvae are known to incorporate bits of whatever they can find into their cocoons, be it fish bone or bits of leaves. Hubert Duprat gave them gold, turquoise, gems and pearls.
Ahh… I remember Gerald Durrell writing about these, and how he would switch out the building materials in the wee flies environments so that their little homes would have patterns and many different colors.
